(ENGLISH) *Supergirl* is another major disappointment from the new DC universe. I did not like *Superman*, and this film does little to restore my confidence in the direction the franchise has chosen. There are moments when it appears ready to recover, find genuine emotion or become something more interesting, but every time it comes close, it falls again. The frustrating part is that not everything is bad. Milly Alcock is very good as Kara Zor-El. She has charisma, presence and a mixture of toughness, sadness and anger that could have created an excellent Supergirl. Even when the screenplay gives her very little, she suggests an inner life that the film rarely knows how to explore. This Kara did not grow up like her cousin. She witnessed the destruction of her world and carries far more painful memories. That offered a great opportunity to create a different kind of heroine: someone who does not represent clean, uncomplicated hope, but the difficulty of continuing after losing everything. The film mentions that trauma without truly examining it. Too often, it mistakes depth for showing Kara drunk, angry or sarcastic. It seems to believe that making her a troubled superhero automatically makes her a complex one. The film takes *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* as its starting point but loses much of what made the comic special. It keeps some recognizable characters and situations while abandoning its melancholy, moral weight and quality of a cruel, sorrowful space fable. A film adaptation does not need to reproduce every page. Changes are necessary. But these changes rarely feel designed to find a better cinematic form. Instead, the story has been forced into the preferred tone of the new DC universe: space adventure, irreverent comedy, strange creatures, familiar songs and characters trying very hard to appear rebellious. The influence of *Guardians of the Galaxy* is far too obvious. Strange planets, a dysfunctional group, jokes, popular music, a cute creature and a wounded protagonist using irony to conceal emotion. In those films, the pieces eventually created memorable characters. Here, they frequently feel like parts of a template. The humour does not help. Some of it is childish, crude or simply forced. The film wants this Supergirl to feel wild, unpredictable and punk, but certain scenes seem written by people who believe rebellion consists of drinking, vomiting and saying something offensive. Krem is another serious weakness. He is flat, predictable and never especially threatening. We understand his purpose immediately, but he never develops enough personality to carry the conflict. The film attempts to give the revenge story emotional weight, yet it is difficult to fear such a forgettable antagonist. Ruthye could have provided the emotional heart of the story and revealed Kara’s gradual transformation. Their relationship includes a few effective scenes, especially when the film slows down and allows them to talk. Unfortunately, the screenplay rushes between planets, fights and jokes, preventing the connection from gaining enough depth. Other ideas and characters appear to have been included because somebody thought they would look good in a trailer. Lobo brings energy and noise, but his actual importance is questionable. Much of his involvement could disappear without significantly changing the story. Visually, the film has some attractive moments and the action is competently made, but it lacks a clear identity. There are colours, digital effects and space environments everywhere, yet they constantly recall other films. Everything looks expensive, but very few images remain in the memory. The music, however, is excellent. It may be the best part of the film alongside Milly Alcock. The songs provide energy that the scenes often cannot generate by themselves. One of the strongest moments comes with a very different version of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle.” It is not the original recording, but a reinterpretation that transforms the song considerably and works better than many of the scenes surrounding it. It is also important to separate legitimate criticism from the reaction of people who attack the film simply because it stars a powerful woman. The fact that *Supergirl* is bad does not vindicate those who resent the existence of a female superhero. We can defend stories led by women while demanding that those stories be much better written. Alcock deserves another opportunity with the character. Her Supergirl has real potential, and several moments reveal the film this could have been: sadder, braver, stranger and far more distinctive. Instead, the finished film settles for a familiar formula. It tries to be irreverent, emotional, funny, dark and spectacular at the same time without fully succeeding at any of them. It is not a complete disaster because Alcock holds it together, the soundtrack works and a few scenes suggest that it might recover. It never does. A good Supergirl trapped inside a fairly bad film.
