The Worthy

(CASTELLANO) The Worthy tiene un punto de partida interesante, sobre todo porque no llega desde el lugar habitual. Ver una película postapocalíptica de Emiratos Árabes Unidos, rodada en árabe y con un imaginario distinto al del cine estadounidense, ya le da cierta curiosidad. La escasez de agua, los refugios improvisados, los grupos cerrados de supervivientes y la desconfianza hacia cualquier desconocido forman un escenario reconocible, pero con un sabor algo diferente. La película se puede ver. Tiene ritmo en varios tramos, una ambientación bastante digna y algunas ideas que funcionan mejor de lo esperado. El refugio industrial, la importancia del agua como último recurso y la llegada de extraños que rompen el equilibrio interno dan para tensión. Además, hay algo interesante en comprobar cómo el cine de género se adapta a otros contextos culturales sin dejar de hablar de los mismos miedos: la supervivencia, la violencia, la pérdida de normas y la pregunta de quién merece seguir adelante. El problema es que esa diferencia inicial no basta para sostener toda la película. Al final, The Worthy cae en muchos de los fallos típicos del género, da igual el país de producción. Personajes que podrían estar mejor desarrollados, conflictos demasiado previsibles, giros que se ven venir y una tendencia a convertir el mundo destruido en un escenario para las mismas peleas de siempre. Cambia el idioma, cambia el paisaje, pero la estructura acaba siendo bastante conocida. También se nota cierta limitación en la construcción dramática. La película quiere hablar de selección, comunidad, liderazgo, miedo al otro y reconstrucción de una civilización rota, pero muchas veces esas ideas quedan por debajo de la acción y de los enfrentamientos. Hay momentos que apuntan a algo más ambicioso, incluso a una posible continuación más interesante, pero el conjunto no termina de profundizar lo suficiente. Aun así, tiene mérito. No es una película sin personalidad, ni un simple producto vacío. Se agradece ver ciencia ficción postapocalíptica fuera del molde americano más habitual, y hay escenas donde la tensión funciona. Pero también es verdad que nunca llega a ser realmente memorable. Le falta fuerza emocional, mejores personajes y un final más satisfactorio para que su mundo se quede contigo después. The Worthy es una película pasable, con una idea algo original y un contexto que la hace más curiosa de lo que sería en manos totalmente convencionales. Pero no deja de ser un ejemplo de cómo el cine postapocalíptico suele tropezar una y otra vez en los mismos sitios: mucha supervivencia, mucha amenaza, mucho grupo encerrado, pero poca verdadera profundidad. Se ve, se agradece la diferencia, y se olvida bastante pronto. (ENGLISH) The Worthy has an interesting starting point, especially because it does not come from the usual place. Watching a post-apocalyptic film from the United Arab Emirates, shot in Arabic and shaped by a different cultural imagination from American cinema, already gives it a certain curiosity. The shortage of clean water, improvised shelters, closed groups of survivors and distrust toward any stranger create a familiar setting, but with a slightly different flavor. The film is watchable. It has pace in several sections, fairly decent atmosphere and a few ideas that work better than expected. The industrial shelter, the importance of water as the last resource and the arrival of strangers who break the internal balance all create tension. There is also something interesting in seeing how genre cinema adapts to other cultural contexts while still speaking about the same fears: survival, violence, the collapse of rules and the question of who deserves to go on. The problem is that this initial difference is not enough to sustain the whole film. In the end, The Worthy falls into many of the usual problems of the genre, no matter the country of production. Characters who could be better developed, conflicts that are too predictable, twists you can see coming and a tendency to turn the destroyed world into a stage for the same old confrontations. The language changes, the landscape changes, but the structure ends up feeling quite familiar. There is also a certain limitation in the dramatic construction. The film wants to talk about selection, community, leadership, fear of the outsider and the rebuilding of a broken civilization, but those ideas often remain beneath the action and confrontations. Some moments suggest something more ambitious, even a potentially more interesting continuation, but the film as a whole never goes deep enough. Still, it has merit. It is not a film without personality, nor an empty product. It is refreshing to see post-apocalyptic science fiction outside the usual American mold, and there are scenes where the tension works. But it is also true that it never becomes truly memorable. It lacks emotional force, stronger characters and a more satisfying ending for its world to stay with you afterwards. The Worthy is a passable film, with a somewhat original idea and a context that makes it more curious than it would be in completely conventional hands. But it is also an example of how post-apocalyptic cinema often stumbles in the same places again and again: lots of survival, lots of threat, lots of people trapped together, but not enough real depth. It can be watched, the difference is appreciated, and it is forgotten fairly quickly.
