In the early 2000s, M. Night Shyamalan was a top Hollywood filmmaker thanks to successful thrillers like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. Jordan Peele's 2022 thriller Nope reminded me of Signs, as both films involve strange occurrences in the night sky. However, while Signs marked a decline in Shyamalan's career, Nope continues Peele's streak of successful and surprising thrillers. The story follows horse trainer Otis Haywood's children, O.J. and Em, as they try to keep their ranch running after their horses have been disappearing and strange objects have been seen in the sky. Peele once again proves his skill as a filmmaker with the visually stunning Nope, which is also packed with unexpected subplots and characters. Sin embargo, mientras Signs marcó un declive en la carrera de Shyamalan, Nope continúa la racha de éxitos y sorpresas de Peele. La historia sigue a los hijos del entrenador de caballos Otis Haywood, O.J. y Em, mientras intentan mantener su rancho en funcionamiento después de que sus caballos han estado desapareciendo y se han visto objetos extraños en el cielo. Peele demuestra una vez más su habilidad como cineasta con Nope, visualmente impactante, que también está repleta de subtramas y personajes inesperados. No es una película necesariamente buena, solo tiene escenas muy bien plasmadas y una singular forma de mantener la intriga. ¿Qué es eso en el cielo? ¿Por qué está aquí? ¿De dónde viene? ésta y otras preguntas pueden o no tener una respuesta, pero es imperativo abordar la cinta con algunos conocimientos previos sobre el tema.

(CASTELLANO) ¡Nop! es una película rara, pero en el buen sentido. Jordan Peele coge una historia de amenaza inexplicable, la mezcla con suspense, terror, western y espectáculo, y consigue que mirar al cielo deje de parecer algo hermoso para convertirse en una fuente de inquietud. Eso ya tiene bastante mérito. La película entretiene, mantiene la tensión y tiene imágenes de esas que se quedan dando vueltas en la cabeza después de verla. Lo mejor es que no funciona solo por la intriga. Tiene buenos personajes, un ambiente muy bien construido y una forma de manejar el suspense que recuerda a ese cine en el que lo que no ves pesa casi tanto como lo que aparece en pantalla. Hay momentos de verdadera tensión, otros más extraños, incluso alguno divertido, y la película consigue mantener una sensación constante de amenaza sin tener que explicarlo todo desde el principio. Daniel Kaluuya está especialmente bien. Su personaje podría parecer seco o demasiado contenido, pero precisamente ahí está la fuerza. No necesita grandes gestos para transmitir miedo, cansancio, orgullo o desconfianza. Tiene una presencia silenciosa muy poderosa, y eso encaja perfectamente con una película que muchas veces funciona mejor cuando observa que cuando habla. Keke Palmer también aporta energía y contraste, y entre los dos la historia gana humanidad. Visualmente, ¡Nop! tiene momentos muy potentes. El paisaje abierto, los caballos, el polvo, el cielo inmenso y esa sensación de algo inexplicable suspendido sobre todo convierten la película en algo más que una simple historia de terror o suspense. Hay algo de aventura, algo de pesadilla y algo de espectáculo clásico, pero pasado por una mirada moderna y bastante personal. Peele sabe crear imágenes memorables, y aquí hay varias. También es verdad que la película no siempre encaja todas sus ideas con la misma limpieza. A ratos parece que quiere hablar de demasiadas cosas a la vez: el trauma, la explotación, la obsesión por mirar, el espectáculo, Hollywood, los animales, la fama. Todo eso le da riqueza, pero también hace que algunas partes resulten más dispersas. El tramo final tiene fuerza visual, aunque quizá no remata todas las emociones e ideas con la misma intensidad con la que las había preparado. Aun así, ¡Nop! es una película muy estimulante. Tiene tensión, suspense, buenos actores, personajes con presencia y una personalidad que se agradece mucho dentro del cine fantástico actual. Puede ser algo irregular, puede dejar hilos abiertos, pero nunca parece una película fabricada en serie. Es entretenida, inquietante, visualmente poderosa y bastante más original de lo habitual. Jordan Peele takes a story built around an inexplicable threat, mixes it with suspense, horror, western elements and spectacle, and manages to make looking at the sky feel less beautiful than unsettling. That alone is quite an achievement. The film is entertaining, tense and full of images that stay in your head after watching it. The best thing is that it does not work only because of the mystery. It has strong characters, a very well-built atmosphere and a way of handling suspense that recalls a kind of cinema where what you do not see can be almost as powerful as what appears on screen. There are moments of real tension, stranger moments, even some funny ones, and the film maintains a constant feeling of threat without needing to explain everything from the beginning. Daniel Kaluuya is especially good. His character could seem dry or too restrained, but that is exactly where his strength lies. He does not need big gestures to convey fear, exhaustion, pride or mistrust. He has a powerful silent presence, and that fits perfectly with a film that often works better when it observes than when it speaks. Keke Palmer also brings energy and contrast, and together they give the story a more human center. Visually, Nope has some very strong moments. The open landscape, the horses, the dust, the huge sky and that feeling of something inexplicable hanging over everything turn the film into more than just a horror or suspense story. There is adventure, nightmare and classic spectacle here, but filtered through a modern and very personal eye. Peele knows how to create memorable images, and this film has several of them. It is also true that the film does not always fit all its ideas together with the same clarity. At times, it seems to want to talk about too many things at once: trauma, exploitation, the obsession with watching, spectacle, Hollywood, animals, fame. All of that gives the film richness, but it also makes some parts feel more scattered. The final stretch has visual power, although it may not resolve all its emotions and ideas with the same intensity with which it sets them up. Even so, Nope is a very stimulating film. It has tension, suspense, good actors, memorable characters and a personality that feels very welcome in modern fantasy cinema. It may be somewhat uneven, and it may leave some threads hanging, but it never feels like a factory-made movie. It is entertaining, unsettling, visually powerful and far more original than usual.
