The Strain

(CASTELLANO) Me ha gustado bastante la serie, sobre todo por su tono, por su imaginería y por esa manera tan física y desagradable de tratar el vampirismo. Tiene momentos muy potentes y se nota bastante el universo de Guillermo del Toro en lo visual, en los monstruos y en esa mezcla de epidemia, horror corporal y fin del mundo. Lo mejor, para mí, es cuando la serie se centra en el avance de la plaga y en la sensación de que todo se va descomponiendo poco a poco. Ahí sí funciona de verdad. Tiene fuerza, atmósfera y una mitología que, aunque a veces se pone excesiva, le da bastante personalidad frente a otras historias de vampiros más convencionales. El problema es que también se nota mucho que alargan la historia más de la cuenta. Hay tramas, vueltas y repeticiones que terminan pesando, y eso hace que una serie que me gusta acabe haciéndose un poco pesada por momentos. No es que pierda del todo el interés, pero sí da la sensación de que podría haber sido más directa y más eficaz. También hay personajes y decisiones que no siempre ayudan. A ratos el drama se impone demasiado sobre el impulso del terror, y no todo está igual de bien llevado. Aun así, cuando la serie recupera el pulso y vuelve a lo monstruoso, al asedio y al caos, vuelve a enganchar con bastante facilidad. Eso sí, sigo prefiriendo los libros en los que se basa. Me parecen más compactos, más tensos y mejor resueltos en cómo desarrollan la historia. La serie amplía cosas interesantes, pero también diluye parte de la fuerza que tenía el material original. En conjunto, me parece una serie muy disfrutable, con ideas muy buenas y una estética muy marcada, pero también bastante irregular. Me ha gustado, sí, pero creo que habría funcionado mejor con menos rodeos y más contundencia. (ENGLISH) I liked the series quite a lot, mainly because of its tone, its imagery, and that very physical, unpleasant way it treats vampirism. It has some really powerful moments, and Guillermo del Toro’s universe can clearly be felt in the visuals, the creatures, and that mix of epidemic, body horror, and apocalypse. What works best for me is when the series focuses on the spread of the plague and on the feeling that everything is slowly falling apart. That is where it really comes alive. It has force, atmosphere, and a mythology that, even when it becomes a bit excessive, gives it far more personality than more conventional vampire stories. The problem is that it also becomes very obvious that the story is stretched out more than necessary. There are plot turns, repetitions, and detours that start to weigh it down, and that makes a show I genuinely like feel a bit heavy at times. It never completely loses interest, but it does feel like it could have been more direct and more effective. There are also characters and decisions that do not always help. At times the drama takes over too much from the horror drive, and not everything is handled equally well. Even so, whenever the series finds its rhythm again and returns to the monstrous side, the siege, and the chaos, it becomes gripping very quickly. That said, I still prefer the novels it is based on. I find them tighter, more intense, and better resolved in the way they develop the story. The series expands some interesting aspects, but it also dilutes part of the strength that the original material had. Overall, I think it is a very enjoyable series, with very good ideas and a strong aesthetic, but also a fairly uneven one. I liked it, yes, but I think it would have worked better with fewer detours and more force
